The Berkeley Database Information Index (BDII) is an LDAP-based information system. Various services available on the grid publish their information in LDAP on the hosts they run on. This information is aggregated at site level by a so-called site BDII. The information published by all sites on the grid is aggregated by top-level BDIIs, which hold information about all services available on the grid.

There are numerous top-level BDIIs on the grid. The top-level BDII at SARA is: This top-level BDII is of most interest to the enduser. On the UI and WNs a top-level BDII should be defined in the environment variable LCG_GFAL_INFOSYS. Wherever in this documentation is referred to the BDII, a top-level BDII is meant.
